The WKNDR concept was inspired by the versatility of an outdoor multi-tool, and was envisioned as a compact yet fully equipped adventure van, thoughtfully designed with everything you need for exploration. The project earned the 2025 Red Dot Award: Best of the Best in the Cars and Motorcycles category.

As Lead CMF Designer, I collaborated with a small team of two industrial designers and one engineer, driving the color, material, and finish strategy that brought the concept’s multifunctional vision to life.

CMF INSPIRATION

I was heavily influenced by outdoor gear, activewear, and footwear when developing the CMF for the vehicle. I also focused on finding sustainable solutions and discovered a flooring material called Nike Grind, which uses recycled rubber and old Nike running shoes to create a durable, washable flooring perfect for the van.

I liked the idea of incorporating a more vibrant color for the interior, but I wanted to avoid too much contrast. Since there would be many small parts inside, I didn’t want it to look cluttered or overwhelming once users filled the space with their own gear.

I wanted the exterior to be like a chameleon, blending into its surroundings whether parked in the woods, at the beach, or in someone’s driveway.

PROBLEM SOLVING

The team wanted to make this vehicle the perfect companion for outdoor enthusiasts, with the goal of simplifying the user’s experience. We all agreed on one key challenge: the biggest time sink was locating and organizing all the gear needed for a weekend adventure, as well as the packing and unpacking process.

To address this, we added rails to the interior of the vehicle, similar to the slatwall rail system commonly found in garages and shops. This design allows users to keep their outdoor gear packed in storage bins, which can be easily slid from their garage directly into the vehicle without the need to unpack.

DESIGN PROCESS

I defined and delivered all CMF material specifications for interior and exterior components, creating vendor callouts and overseeing the development, ordering, and tracking of paints and materials. In addition, I contributed to the booth CMF design, layout, and curation of all adventure accessories, ensuring a cohesive presentation of the WKNDR concept.
